Jet ski owners told to register their craft

DUBAI // Jet ski owners have been told to ensure their vehicles are fully licensed and registered from next month, as part of a campaign launched by the Dubai Maritime City Authority.

The initiative, run by the government regulator for Dubai’s marine users, will last for two months starting on September 1.

“The new campaign is a major step towards regulating jet ski use, which is now a widely popular water sport in Dubai,” said Ali Al Daboos, the DMCA’s executive director of operations.

The registration process includes filling out an application, presenting identification documents such as a passport or an Emirates ID, and taking the jet ski to the DMCA headquarters near Rashid Port in Bur Dubai.

Those who do not have documents for their jet skis are encouraged to show proof of ownership by presenting receipts.

Earlier measures introduced by the DMCA included allocating areas where jet skis can be used off Dubai’s coastline, setting a maximum speed limit and educating about safety procedures and practices when using jet skis, in a bid to decrease the number of accidents in which they are involved.

The registration campaign is part of the authority’s effort to enhance marine safety and regulate water sports in line with international best practices.

This also involves developing rules and laws to reduce risks to people, the environment and property, and create a safe environment for water sports.
