UMM AL QAWAIN // An unidentified person shot three speed cameras on Umm Al Qawain's Al Ittihad Road late Sunday and early today, police said.
A police spokesman at UAQ headquarters said police were still investigating the attack, but it was believed that the shooter had earlier been caught speeding by the radars and was trying to evade paying fines.
Al Ittihad Road in UAQ is a well-used highway to Ras Al Khaimah, and reduced its speed limit to 80kph recently. Radar cameras trigger whenever they clock a vehicle going over 100kph, which many motorists have complained is too slow for a highway.
Today, motorists could see police officers collecting evidence from the damaged radars. A police spokesman said officers were hunting for the person who fired the shots.
According to a police spokesman, the emirate has 37 radars, including four mobile units.
