DUBAI // A programme to prepare young Emirati women for potential summer jobs was announced yesterday by Zayed University. The World of Work campaign, which trains students who want to find work in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, is aimed at getting students to capitalise on a particularly long summer break. The project, which started a month ago, is teaching students how to draft a resume, prepare for interviews and practice workplace etiquette.
Several students will begin work in July, and others are being recruited for paid summer jobs at the university. Organisers hope the campaign will address Emiratisation and women's employment issues by making students more qualified for work. The project has enlisted 75 students and support from 45 public and private institutions. "The programme is a good opportunity [for students] to deal with the requirements of the job market," Dr Sulaiman al Jasem, the vice president of ZU, said yesterday.
This year, the Abu Dhabi Education Council's director general said the overall unemployment rate in Abu Dhabi was 14 per cent, and 21 per cent for women. Only six per cent of working Emirati women were in the private sector in 2008, according to the Department of Economic development. @Email:kshaheen@thenational.ae
