Man jailed for five years for supporting Muslim Brotherhood

ABU DHABI // A man has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined Dh1 million for publishing support for the Muslim Brotherhood online.

Emirati Marwan Mohamed Ateej, 43, used his personal Twitter account to show sympathy towards the group, the Federal Supreme Court was told.

He also published information to damage the reputation of the UAE, defaming the UAE’s state security and insulting a judge at the court on Twitter.

Court documents stated that “he legitimised the work of the Muslim Brotherhood calling them peaceful unarmed heroes and rallied on people to support them”.

He was tried under the UAE’s cybercrime law number 5 of 2012 which criminalises all forms of electronic abuse.
