Labourers deny part in Dh500,000 cable theft, Dubai court hears

Three Pakistanis accused of being part of 15-strong gang that robbed warehouse in Al Qusais.

DUBAI // Three labourers have denied being part of a gang that attacked six warehouse security guards, tied them up then stole electric cables and other construction materials worth half a million dirhams.

Dubai Criminal Court was told that at about 10pm on November 4 last year, the trio were part of a 15-strong gang that barged into a warehouse in Al Qusais then used cables to tie the guards’ hands and legs before blindfolding them with sheets.

“They assaulted us and one of them was holding a knife. He told us that if we screamed for help, they will cause us harm,” testified Pakistani guard KA, 24.

MM, 42, from Bangladesh, told prosecutors that the thieves got away with cables and other items worth about half a million dirhams. “When the noise stopped, we knew they left so we managed to remove the sheets and saw that they had damaged all the security cameras,” added MM.

Indian guard MMA, 43, testified that the defendants also stole the computers connected to the surveillance cameras to ensure no images of them were found.

The court was told that the defendants also stole items belonging to the guards, including money, mobile phones, gold rings and ID cards.

The three Pakistani defendants - NM, 30, AM, 26, and MK, 27 - denied six counts of armed robbery.

The next hearing is on March 21.

Another way to earn air miles

In addition to the Emirates and Etihad programmes, there is the Air Miles Middle East card, which offers members the ability to choose any airline, has no black-out dates and no restrictions on seat availability. Air Miles is linked up to HSBC credit cards and can also be earned through retail partners such as Spinneys, Sharaf DG and The Toy Store.

An Emirates Dubai-London round-trip ticket costs 180,000 miles on the Air Miles website. But customers earn these ‘miles’ at a much faster rate than airline miles. Adidas offers two air miles per Dh1 spent. Air Miles has partnerships with websites as well, so booking.com and agoda.com offer three miles per Dh1 spent.

“If you use your HSBC credit card when shopping at our partners, you are able to earn Air Miles twice which will mean you can get that flight reward faster and for less spend,” says Paul Lacey, the managing director for Europe, Middle East and India for Aimia, which owns and operates Air Miles Middle East.
