ABU DHABI // The National is pleased to host the second annual #Startwalking Challenge.
Registration is now open for participants who will try to walk 10,000 steps a day for 30 days, from March 20 to April 18.
Mohammed Al Otaiba, Editor-in-Chief of The National, invites everyone to join him.
“Last year we saw hundreds of people across the UAE participate in the #Startwalking Challenge, which is part of our #healthyliving campaign. Together we walked the equivalent of twice around the Earth.”
To join, participants should sign up on the #Startwalking website and register a fitness tracker: Fitbit, Jawbone, Withings, Misfit, Garim or Apple Watch; the built-in tracker on iPhone 5s or later; or the Moves app for iOS and Android.
Once the challenge starts those taking part can follow real-time rankings of how many steps all walkers take each day.
“Last year we saw lots of healthy competition between colleagues, friends and even large families who were all looking to outshine each other’s step counts,” said Al Otaiba.
“And it was encouraging to see a community develop as the site’s message board filled with motivational comments of encouragement.”
Last year a top prize was awarded to the person who took the most steps but the reward structure will change this year to encourage everyone to keep walking and meeting their goals.
“This year we want to make the chance of winning proportionate to achieving the daily goal,” Al Otaiba explained.
Every participant who has met the 10,000-step goal will be entered into a random draw each day. At the end of the 30-day challenge five winners will be drawn and each will receive Dh5,000 in shopping vouchers – so the more days you complete 10,000 steps, the more chances you have to win.
“Of course, the greatest reward is becoming more active, seeing more of the community on foot and enjoying the weather before summer is upon us,” Al Otaiba said.
Registration for the #Startwalking Challenge closes on March 19.
