SHARJAH // A gang has been arrested for fraud after they passed off gold-plated scrap metal as stolen gold bars worth Dh1 million.

The Asian men allegedly sold the scrap metal to a Pakistani man for Dh500,000 after convincing him that they were genuine stolen gold bars.

The Pakistani man reported to the police that men broke into his car and stole Dh400,000 while it was parked in an area of Sharjah.

Police investigated and arrested the gang but they denied stealing the money and confessed to defrauding the man by selling him the scrap metal.

Sharjah Police investigators then questioned the Pakistani man again about the allegations made and he told them that after he knew he was conned, he reported the incident as theft to hide the fact that he bought stolen goods.

The gang were referred to prosecutors to face fraud charges, while the man was referred on charges of knowingly purchasing stolen goods and obstruction of justice.
