UMM AL QUWAIN // A fire that started in a power generator and spread through palm trees left three houses gutted in Umm al Quwain this morning. Two houses occupied by workers and a neighbouring building, which was unoccupied, were all reduced to ashes, said Lt Col Hassan Ali bin Sallam the head of UAQ Civil Defence. "But we managed to control the fire from spreading to the neighbouring workers accommodation," he said.
There were no injuries or fatalities, police and civil defence officials evacuated all the people in the neighbourhood to make it easier for fire fighters. He said the fire had started at a power generator in the neighbourhood surrounded by palm trees, it then spread through the trees to the abandoned home and workers houses. "Police are still investigating why the power generator caught fire, but we ask residents not to put power generators near palm trees as they are flammable," he said. ykakande@thenational.ae
