Dubai gang ‘attacked man with pepper spray and stole Dh501,000 from him’

DUBAI// A man was attacked with pepper spray by a gang who stole a bag containing Dh501,000, the Dubai Criminal Court was told.

Prosecutors said on July 29 last year Pakistani M E, 37, was with three other men who followed Indian victim P J, 42, to a RAK Bank branch in Al Rafaa.

“I was sent by my company to withdraw Dh501,000 from the company’s account, when I did and headed to my bike in the car park four men attacked me and I started screaming,” said P J who was blinded by pepper spray.

His screams altered two Yemeni brothers who were standing nearby.

“I saw as the men were trying to grab a bag from a man’s arms so my brother and I chased the one who got the bag and caught him then called police,” testified A H, 25.

Three of the gang were arrested and prosecuted. M E remained at large until his arrest in December last year.

He denied a charge of attempted robbery and told judges that his role was to watch the victim and inform the others when the man left the bank.

The next hearing will be on March 23.
