SHARJAH // Sharjah Police are urging motorists to regularly check their tyres this summer as part of a safety campaign launched this week.
Col Sultan Abdullah al Khayal, the director general of Sharjah Police Public Relations and Moral Guidance, said the campaign was in line with the Ministry of Interior's efforts to ensure safer roads. Motorists will be told to check the condition of their tyres regularly.

"Tyres should be inspected for wear, cracking, bulging, or objects caught in the tread. If any of these is found, the tyre should be replaced," he said. "At least every week drivers should check the tyre pressure. Insufficient pressure can lead to overheating of the tyre and subsequently internal damage. At high speeds, this could result in tread separation and even bursting of the tyre."
Police are printing brochures and using print and broadcast media adverts in the campaign.
There will also be random tyre checks by police patrols.
He said bad tyres were a major cause of overturning vehicle accidents during the summer.
