Police say they want to reduce the emirate's number of road deaths to 120 or fewer in 2012 - a step on the way towards their 2020 goal of zero.
The number represents a reduction of 15 from the 2011 target of 135 or fewer.
"We need to reduce road fatalities by 15 every year if we are to achieve our 2020 strategic objectives, and judging by how things are going we are on the right track," said Maj Gen Mohammed Saif Al Zaffin, head of the traffic department.
The department is planning to launch a new programme, a "white points" system to reward good drivers and encourage others to comply with safety rules in 2012.
"We are often preoccupied with cracking down on bad drivers, so we tend to forget good drivers. This programme will change this," Maj Gen Al Zaffin said.
White points will be awarded to drivers who do not commit traffic violations, do not have any fines, including those from Salik, and who renew their registration on time.
If they receive a certain amount of points, they get benefits from companies sponsoring the initiative. It is hoped those rewards will encourage people to follow safety regulations.
The anti-narcotics department is aiming to intensify its awareness campaigns in 2012 by participating in many public events, such as scouts activities and employment fairs.
It also aims to have its annual awareness campaign on International Anti-Drugs Day on June 26. A tent in Mamzar Park and stands in several shopping malls will educate the public on the dangers of drug abuse.
