LONDON // Bob Baffert has revealed that Arrogate will not contest the Dubai World Cup in March after the American trainer’s stable star was announced as the world’s best horse on Tuesday.
Arrogate and California Chrome were confirmed as the top two horses in the world ahead of their epic clash in Saturday’s Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park.
Arrogate’s narrow victory over California Chrome in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita in November, when the pair pulled over 10 lengths clear of Pegasus rival Keen Ice, was also rated as the best performance in the world in 2016.
As a result of that titanic tussle, the Classic was announced as the world’s best race in 2016, and the opportunity to transform Arrogate into the first horse to win back-to-back Classics since Tiznow in 2001 at Del Mar in November is the ultimate aim.

“We’ll give him a little break after the Pegasus as usually we would not run him in the winter,” Baffert said at the World’s Best Horse event at Claridge’s Hotel in London.
“The Breeders’ Cup is very important to [owner] Prince Khalid Abdullah and we are getting him ready for that.
“We will probably run him a couple of times before the Breeders’ Cup and we will work back from that.
“I wouldn’t take him to Dubai. We bought him for American racing, and with his pedigree we want him to stay in America.”
Arrogate was drawn on the rail in Stall 1 for Saturday’s inaugural US$12 million (Dh44m) contest, while California Chrome will emerge from the widest stall of all in 12.
Arrogate beat the Dubai World Cup winner by half a length in November, and with the son of Unbridled’s Song likely to be an improved specimen Baffert is hopeful of a repeat victory.
“I would say on paper it is a two-horse race,” Baffert said. “He has been training well, and he is just a superior racehorse. It is going to take a superior racehorse to beat Chrome.”
None of the top five performances named in Tuesday’s list were in Europe, with California Chrome’s victories in the Pacific Classic and Awesome Again Stakes being named equal second. His runners-up spot in the Classic was also rated in second place and edged out Winx, the Australian mare, in to third. Winx’s runs in the Cox Plate and Doncaster Mile ensured she was named the world’s highest turf horse and mare.
Only four of the top 10 races were staged in Europe, with the Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan named in ninth place.
The Dubai World Cup was only joint 15th alongside the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, the Hong Kong Cup and Japan’s Takarazuka Kinen.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
- An Egyptian Mummy mask dating from 700BC-30BC, is on offer for £11,807 ($15,275) online by a seller in Mexico
- A coffin lid dating back to 664BC-332BC was offered for sale by a Colorado-based art dealer, with a starting price of $65,000
- A shabti that was on sale through a Chicago-based coin dealer, dating from 1567BC-1085BC, is up for $1,950

Where to donate in the UAE
You can donate to several registered charities through a “donation catalogue”. The use of the donation is quite specific, such as buying a fan for a poor family in Niger for Dh130.
The General Authority of Islamic Affairs & Endowments
The site has an e-donation service accepting debit card, credit card or e-Dirham, an electronic payment tool developed by the Ministry of Finance and First Abu Dhabi Bank.
You can donate online or order Smiles n’ Stuff products handcrafted by Al Noor students. The centre publishes a wish list of extras needed, starting at Dh500.
Beit Al Khair Society has the motto “From – and to – the UAE,” with donations going towards the neediest in the country. Its website has a list of physical donation sites, but people can also contribute money by SMS, bank transfer and through the hotline 800-22554.
Dar Al Ber Society, which has charity projects in 39 countries, accept cash payments, money transfers or SMS donations. Its donation hotline is 800-79.
Dubai Cares provides several options for individuals and companies to donate, including online, through banks, at retail outlets, via phone and by purchasing Dubai Cares branded merchandise. It is currently running a campaign called Bookings 2030, which allows people to help change the future of six underprivileged children and young people.
Those who travel on Emirates have undoubtedly seen the little donation envelopes in the seat pockets. But the foundation also accepts donations online and in the form of Skywards Miles. Donated miles are used to sponsor travel for doctors, surgeons, engineers and other professionals volunteering on humanitarian missions around the world.
On the Emirates Red Crescent website you can choose between 35 different purposes for your donation, such as providing food for fasters, supporting debtors and contributing to a refugee women fund. It also has a list of bank accounts for each donation type.
Gulf for Good raises funds for partner charity projects through challenges, like climbing Kilimanjaro and cycling through Thailand. This year’s projects are in partnership with Street Child Nepal, Larchfield Kids, the Foundation for African Empowerment and SOS Children's Villages. Since 2001, the organisation has raised more than $3.5 million (Dh12.8m) in support of over 50 children’s charities.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum launched the Noor Dubai Foundation a decade ago with the aim of eliminating all forms of preventable blindness globally. You can donate Dh50 to support mobile eye camps by texting the word “Noor” to 4565 (Etisalat) or 4849 (du).
