Vandinho completes Sharjah's trio of Brazilians for UAE domestic season

Defensive midfielder completes the UAE club's foreign quota as he joins Marcelinho and Edinho and Iran international Iman Mobali.

SHARJAH // Sharjah have completed their quota of foreign players ahead of the 2011/12 domestic professional league season today by adding the Brazilian midfielder Vanderson Valter de Almeida, Tim March of the club confirmed.

De Almeida, often known as Vandinho, joins two other Brazilians, Marcelo "Marcelinho" Oliveira and Edinho, in the Sharjah squad, which also boasts the Iran international Iman Mobali, who joins the side under the new rule allowing a fourth foreigner if he carries an Asian passport.

Vandinho, 33, played in 158 matches with the Portuguese side Braga over the past seven seasons and is likely to resume his traditional role as a defensive midfielder, now that he has joined Sharjah.

Mobali is expected to take on a playmaking role for Carlos Azenha, Sharjah's new Portuguese coach, with Edinho playing on the left and Marcelinho, who was the third top goalscorer in the league last season, playing the striker position.

Sharjah finished seventh in the league last season, on 30 points, only five points adrift of third place.

Also, the club have raised Dh100,000 as part of the national effort to combat famine in Somalia, said March, who is general coordinator of the club. He said every employee of the Sharjah club, including the footballers, contributed one day's pay to the effort, and the Dh50,000 raised was matched by the club to take the total to six figures.

"This is football with a meaning, football giving back," March said.
