Matar chasing two titles

ABU DHABI // The best Arabian, Asian and African footballers will be honoured at the first annual Super Awards in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday night. The Arabic sport magazine has polled journalists, players and fans to vote on a shortlist of 10 for each category. The UAE's Ismail Matar is one of the favourites for the Arab award after finishing runner-up in the Asian Footballer of the Year. Hosni Abd Rabo of Al Ahli and his Egyptian compatriot Amr Zaki, who has been so impressive for Wigan in the Premier League, have also been nominated, with Zaki also put forward for the African category.

Matar is also up for the Asia award, as Park Ji Sung (Man Utd and South Korea). Emannual Adebayor (Arsenal and Togo) and Michael Essien (Chelsea and Ghana) are in the running for the African prize, and will both be in attendance at the Emirates Palace hotel. The awards are sponsored by Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, while the board of trustees is chaired by Pierluigi Collina, the Italian who refereed the 2002 World Cup final.

Arabian shortlist: Ahmed Hassan, Ismail Matar, Khalfan Ibrahim Khalfan, Ahmed Ajab, Hosni Abd Rabo, Amr Zaki, Faisal Al-Ajab, Mohamed Aboutrika, Yasser al Kahtani, Hicham Aboucharouane Asian shortlist: Ismail Matar, Park Ji Sung, Jawad Nekonam. Brett Emerton, Shunsuke Nakamura, Sbastian Sorria, Server Djeparov. Hawar Mulla Mohammed, Gholam Reza Rezaei, Yasuhito Endo African shortlist: Didier Drogba, Emmanuel Adebayor, Sulley Muntari, Amr Zaki, Samuel Eto'o, Michael Essien, Mohamed Aboutrika, Mahamadou Diarra, Stephen Worgu, Seydou Keita

Subj: Accelerating in the Middle East

Five years ago, Uber launched in the Middle East. It was the start of an incredible journey, with millions of riders and drivers finding new ways to move and work in a dynamic region that’s become so important to Uber. Now Pakistan is one of our fastest-growing markets in the world, women are driving with Uber across Saudi Arabia, and we chose Cairo to launch our first Uber Bus product late last year.

Today we are taking the next step in this journey—well, it’s more like a leap, and a big one: in a few minutes, we’ll announce that we’ve agreed to acquire Careem. Importantly, we intend to operate Careem independently, under the leadership of co-founder and current CEO Mudassir Sheikha. I’ve gotten to know both co-founders, Mudassir and Magnus Olsson, and what they have built is truly extraordinary. They are first-class entrepreneurs who share our platform vision and, like us, have launched a wide range of products—from digital payments to food delivery—to serve consumers.

I expect many of you will ask how we arrived at this structure, meaning allowing Careem to maintain an independent brand and operate separately. After careful consideration, we decided that this framework has the advantage of letting us build new products and try new ideas across not one, but two, strong brands, with strong operators within each. Over time, by integrating parts of our networks, we can operate more efficiently, achieve even lower wait times, expand new products like high-capacity vehicles and payments, and quicken the already remarkable pace of innovation in the region.

This acquisition is subject to regulatory approval in various countries, which we don’t expect before Q1 2020. Until then, nothing changes. And since both companies will continue to largely operate separately after the acquisition, very little will change in either teams’ day-to-day operations post-close. Today’s news is a testament to the incredible business our team has worked so hard to build.

It’s a great day for the Middle East, for the region’s thriving tech sector, for Careem, and for Uber.

Uber on,

Dara

It’ll be summer in the city as car show tries to move with the times

If 2008 was the year that rocked Detroit, 2019 will be when Motor City gives its annual car extravaganza a revamp that aims to move with the times.

A major change is that this week's North American International Auto Show will be the last to be held in January, after which the event will switch to June.

The new date, organisers said, will allow exhibitors to move vehicles and activities outside the Cobo Center's halls and into other city venues, unencumbered by cold January weather, exemplified this week by snow and ice.

In a market in which trends can easily be outpaced beyond one event, the need to do so was probably exacerbated by the decision of Germany's big three carmakers – BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi – to skip the auto show this year.

The show has long allowed car enthusiasts to sit behind the wheel of the latest models at the start of the calendar year but a more fluid car market in an online world has made sales less seasonal.

Similarly, everyday technology seems to be catching up on those whose job it is to get behind microphones and try and tempt the visiting public into making a purchase.

Although sparkly announcers clasp iPads and outline the technical gadgetry hidden beneath bonnets, people's obsession with their own smartphones often appeared to offer a more tempting distraction.

“It's maddening,” said one such worker at Nissan's stand.

The absence of some pizzazz, as well as top marques, was also noted by patrons.

“It looks like there are a few less cars this year,” one annual attendee said of this year's exhibitors.

“I can't help but think it's easier to stay at home than to brave the snow and come here.”

So what is Spicy Chickenjoy?

Just as McDonald’s has the Big Mac, Jollibee has Spicy Chickenjoy – a piece of fried chicken that’s crispy and spicy on the outside and comes with a side of spaghetti, all covered in tomato sauce and topped with sausage slices and ground beef. It sounds like a recipe that a child would come up with, but perhaps that’s the point – a flavourbomb combination of cheap comfort foods. Chickenjoy is Jollibee’s best-selling product in every country in which it has a presence.
