Dubai coach not losing hope

No one thought it would be a walk in the park for the newly promoted clubs, Dubai and Kalba. And so far it hasn't; they have been outscored 9-3 and have four defeats in four games in the early stages of the Pro League season.

Ayman al Ramadi, Dubai's Egyptian coach, said his team still has 20 games to amass some points and get out of the (bottom two) relegation zone.

"Our target would be to have 12 to 14 points after the first round," he told The National's Amith Passela after a 2-0 away loss to Al Shabab on Friday night. "It is tough but not impossible.

"We had a decent first game with Al Ain but followed it up with a poor game at home. We didn't play well; it's as simple as that. The mistakes were in all areas. We had a few chances to score and then that didn't happen. And then we made a couple of mistakes at the back for Shabab to score twice at the end."

In truth, Dubai has been more competitive than has Kalba. Dubai lost only 4-3, away, to Al Ain, and the French striker Michael N'dri scored two goals.

At Shabab, the match was locked at 0-0 until Julio Cesar broke through for a goal in the 65th minute. Lamine Diarra got the second goal at the 83-minute mark.

Dubai is home to Al Nasr when it resumes Pro League play on Thursday, September 16. Al Nasr also has zero points from two games.

Three tips from La Perle's performers

1 The kind of water athletes drink is important. Gwilym Hooson, a 28-year-old British performer who is currently recovering from knee surgery, found that out when the company was still in Studio City, training for 12 hours a day. “The physio team was like: ‘Why is everyone getting cramps?’ And then they realised we had to add salt and sugar to the water,” he says.

2 A little chocolate is a good thing. “It’s emergency energy,” says Craig Paul Smith, La Perle’s head coach and former Cirque du Soleil performer, gesturing to an almost-empty open box of mini chocolate bars on his desk backstage.

3 Take chances, says Young, who has worked all over the world, including most recently at Dragone’s show in China. “Every time we go out of our comfort zone, we learn a lot about ourselves,” she says.
