Create venues where youths can belong

Anxiety and alienation are not uncommon experiences among adolescents everywhere, and the pace of the UAE's transformation may increase their frequency here.

Gang violence predates the street fights chronicled in West Side Story or even the family feuds in Shakespearean Verona. The tragic result of a fight between groups of young men is not mere fiction for the UAE. After being caught in a melee between two groups of 15 and 16-year-old males in the Rashadiya neighbourhood of Dubai last week, an Emirati boy was stabbed 11 times. His murder was reminiscent of the violent exchanges that occur with unfortunate regularity in many parts of the world.
In cities undergoing rapid change, from 19th century London to 20th century Los Angeles, groups of young men have gathered together for profit and protection. While Dubai has largely been an exception to this rule, it must actively monitor and fight the conditions that have made gangs an attractive option for youths in many other parts of the world. The appeal of a gang is simple. They offer a false hope to those suffering from the insecurity of adolescence and the anonymity of the city. They provide a sense of belonging and a perverted vision of what it means to be a man for those who do not know how to become one. The best way to combat these forces is to offer young people attractive alternatives in the form of after-school options including open gyms, participation in team sport, and coaches who can also serve as mentors. For those not inclined to participate in sport, they should be able to find belonging in other informal settings where they can develop their artistic and musical interests. Too few of these venues are currently available to young people in the UAE.
Clearly, youth in the UAE are under stress. As we report today, a survey from Asda'a, a global marketing firm, reveals that 63 per cent of young people in the nation say that they have been affected by the recent financial crisis, the highest incidence in the Gulf. For Arab youth in general, 67 per cent say that they are very concerned with the rising cost of living and their prospects for employment. Living in a fast paced and global society presents risks along with rewards. Anxiety and alienation are not uncommon among adolescents everywhere; the pace of the UAE's transformation may increase their frequency and severity.
The Asda'a survey also reports that seven out of 10 young people in the Arab world thought of themselves as global citizens. That is encouraging. Nevertheless, there are many youths who struggle to define themselves and have scant understanding of what citizenship entails. It is this minority that may find solace and solidarity in joining others who are also lost. For all young people and for society as a whole, they must see that there is something more constructive to be a part of.
