Gamers set to battle for Dh150,000 in prizes at Dubai event

At Game Evolution professional teams will compete in two major and widespread PC games, while individual players will have the chance to compete in four different console games.

DUBAI // Thousands of gamers from across the world will descend on Dubai World Trade Centre to battle it out for cash prizes worth Dh150,000 in games such as Street Fighter and Pro Evolution Soccer.

At Game Evolution, professional teams will compete in two major and widespread PC games, Dota 2 and Counter Strike: Global Offensive.

Individual players will have the chance to compete in four different console games: Mortal Kombat: X; Ultra Street Fighter IV; Super Smash Bros 4; and Pro Evolution Soccer 2015.

Qualifying rounds begin this month and finalists will be invited to the main event on November 6 and 7 to compete for the grand prize in their respective tournament.

Anas Al Madani, vice chairman of event sponsors Index Holding, said: “Gamers across the world now are professional, they wake up, practice and then play at tournaments. They are becoming well known and some are celebrities in their own right.

“Our objective is to recognise this community and the gamers in the region, and give them a platform to show their talent to compete with others around the world.

“As an industry, gaming is growing faster than TV and cinema. Players can now get sponsored and make a career out of gaming.

“It is always challenging for parents to understand it can be a career for their children but it is easier when they see the opportunities that are available.

“They can now be recognised on the international stage for what they achieve. It is similar to other sports, where there needs to be a balance between study and gaming.”

According to research company SuperData, global market revenues for video game competitions, or eSports, reached US$613 million (Dh2.25 billion) so far this year, and the number of viewers has climbed to 134 million worldwide.

An exhibition will be running parallel to the tournaments at the venue, offering support to UAE nationals and local businesses to bring their small companies to the international stage through technology and gaming.

The General Department of Smart Services at Dubai Police will even be participating by promoting their services.

One of the main services offered by the department is developing games that help raise awareness of its campaigns. These games ill be showcased at the event and open for the public to experience.
