Attack on team should not crush Angola's dreams

The attack on Togo's national football team in Cabinda province on Friday was an assault not just on the team, but on the aspirations of the country and continent.

It was something of a triumph that Angola was chosen to host this year's Africa Cup of Nations. For decades the country had epitomised the continent's worst problems during a fratricidal civil war that was stoked by the intervention of other African nations, the United States, the Soviet Union and Cuba. But since the 2002 ceasefire between major factions in the country, Angola has had a new lease on life. The country's extraordinary preparations to provide sporting venues and host an international event were just the latest examples of the nation's optimism.
The attack on Togo's national football team in Cabinda province on Friday, which killed at least one person and wounded nine others, was an assault not just on the team, but on the aspirations of the country and continent. The separatist group that claimed responsibility, the Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda, has grievances that date back to Portugal's colonial rule of Angola, including a lack of development in the province, which is separated from the rest of Angola by a strip of land belonging to the Democratic Republic of Congo. In a sad irony, Nations Cup matches were scheduled in Cabinda precisely to encourage investment.
Particularly for football-mad Africa, the distinction between sport and politics is easily blurred. The analogy with cricket fever in South Asia, and the tragic terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka club in Lahore last March, shows how vulnerable sport can be to terrorist acts. This attack was an act of terrorism, whether the target was the unarmed athletes or their security escorts, as separatists have claimed. Emmanuel Adebayor, the Togo team captain and Manchester City striker, has given a harrowing account of being under fire for more than 20 minutes. He credits the security forces for saving his life. After the loss of a team member, their bus driver and the collective trauma suffered by the players, Togo was justified in withdrawing from the tournament. Clubs like Manchester City are also understandably concerned about the welfare of their players.
But the tournament should not become another casualty. While the safety of players and spectators should be the first concern, this assault in Cabinda should not be allowed to crush Angola's hopes before the tournament even begins. Ahead of this year's World Cup in South Africa, every effort should be made to ensure that the continent can play a positive role in international sport. Angola, and indeed Africa, can prevail in the face of legacies of division and violence - football can help them do this.
