Travel news: Peru gets first Muslim-friendly hotel

The San Isidro district in Lima is now home to Peru’s first-ever Muslim-friendly hotel. Sonesta Hotel El Olivar was awarded accreditation by CrescentRating, receiving five out of seven stars based on facilities provided to Muslim guests, who are offered dedicated prayer areas as well as prayer mats, timetables and a list of mosques close to the hotel. For those who prefer to pray in private, rooms are marked with prayer directions. Several halal dining options, including room-service menus, are on offer, while iftar and suhoor facilities are available during Ramadan. The swimming pool has separate times for men and women. Go green at Mövenpick Deira

Eco-conscious travellers will be happy to know that the Mövenpick Hotel Deira has been re-certified by Green Globe, a global certification for sustainable tourism, for its third year. As part of Mövenpick Hotel Deira’s Sustainability Program, the hotel’s green management strategy includes the promotion of water efficiency. Other efforts include recycling or reusing paper products, restitching old linen to be used as dusters and rags, the use of LED lighting and more. Guests who book into the room will arrive in a chauffeured Bentley, be greeted by the personal concierge and escorted to the private lift, located in the VIP arrival area.
