Timeframe: Raffles Dubai 10 years on
The hotel was the first Raffles to open outside of Asia

The expressions on people’s face tell us a lot in this photograph. It’s November 21, 2007, and Raffles Dubai is officially opening.
Sheikh Hasher bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, director general of Dubai Department of Information, and Diana Ee-Tan, of Raffles, are about to cut into a giant cake of the hotel to celebrate the moment. The Egyptian-themed hotel next to Wafi Mall was the first Raffles to open outside of Asia.
“I look back on it with affection and very special memories,” recalls Bryn Lummus, the lead architect for Raffles Dubai. “The 10th anniversary of the opening ... also brings back memories of many flights between Australia (my home and office), Singapore (Raffles Singapore and the Botanic Gardens), Dubai
and Egypt.”
Ten years on, a million guests have stayed at Raffles Dubai and the pyramid-style hotel has become a landmark in the emirate.
