An overnight roller bag – the type that fits in the cabin above your seat in an airplane – can be both your best friend and worst enemy when it comes to packing for a weekend trip. Fitting everything into one of these cases takes time, effort and, most importantly, a keen editing eye.

If you consider yourself a fashionable type, and need to pack light for a two- or three-day trip, you will likely find yourself in a stressful predicament.

How is it possible to pack such a tight edit of your wardrobe, while still accommodating a number of different possible outfits? What if you forget something? The worst regret is the kind that you feel when the dress you want to wear is thousands of miles away, in your wardrobe.

Here are a few rules that I try to follow when packing for a quick trip.

For a weekend trip that could involve tours, sightseeing and dinners out, versatility is key, and you need to have different outfit options on hand.

I tend to pack only one pair of jeans and one dress or skirt, because I dislike wearing the same silhouette two days in a row. Leggings are a must, and if it’s a two-day trip, I will pack four different tops, to allow for a quick change between the afternoon and evening, if I need it.

Even if it’s only a two-day trip, I will take three pairs of shoes: a pair of trainers, a pair of pretty flats and a pair of nightlife-appropriate heels. I will also pack two bags – one small cross-body and one larger tote.

Throw in your daily make-up products and three or four accessories, and you’re all set to go. But make sure that you pack those other crucial essentials: deodorant, make-up remover and your favourite fragrance.
