Irish theatre group Danu Dubai will be celebrating 100 years of Ireland’s drive for independence in a new elaborate stage production with drama, dance and poetry this month.
Known as the Easter Rising, the rebellion by the Irish republicans came to a head in 1916 to end the British rule in Ireland and establish Republic of Ireland. The sacrifice by the brave during the uprising for independence will be remembered in a three hour show by Danu Dubai Theatre group in association with the Irish Embassy in the UAE.
The two-part Dubai production, which will be staged at Madinat Theatre on April 22 and 23, has been directed by Danu founder Padraig Downey and Declan O'Sullivan. The show will start with the Shadow of a Gunman, a 90-minute classic by Irish playwright Sean O' Casey. The play is about a man who is mistaken for an IRA assassin and is set during the Irish War of Independence.
The celebrations will continue with Irish music, dance and poetry around 20th-century poet William Butler Yeats’ work Easter 1916.
• The shows will take place on April 23 and 23 from 7.30pm at Madinat Theatre — Madinat Jumeirah. Tickets are from Dh100 on madinatjumeirah.etixdubai.com
