ABU DHABI // A plan to add six kilometres of paths to the jogging track along the Abu Dhabi Corniche has been approved by a committee of the Executive Council.

The extension will be integrated into the pathways along the waterfront and surrounding parks to ensure easy access to all facilities, especially for people with special needs.

The committee also approved the master plan for new pavements for pedestrians and cyclists, "which aims to provide secure, adequate and accessible pathways for biking and walking".

The committee meeting was chaired by Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, on Wednesday.

The executive committee approved several decisions and projects for infrastructure, including a guidebook for community centre planning standards.

The book "aims to provide community services to residents, improve land-exploitation schemes, and provide flexibility in using available spaces to respond to the residents' future needs", the committee said.

Sanitation projects aimed at increasing the capacity of processing plans and pumping stations in parts of the emirate were also approved.

They include the sanitation system in Bida Al Mutawa and Tarif in the Western Region, plants in Khalifa City and Icad Industrial Zone, and two pumping stations in Abu Dhabi.

The committee also awarded the tender for building a central control building for traffic lights in Al Ain.

It will manage and operate the smart traffic and transport systems in Al Ain City.

Other approved projects include standardising the licensing and control system in Abu Dhabi, and developing and maintaining parks and landscaping in the Eastern Region.
